Omega-3 Nutritional Drink May Help Preserve Muscle in Cancer Patients During Chemotherapy

This study looked at 39 patients with advanced or recurrent bile duct or pancreatic cancer who were undergoing chemotherapy. Researchers gave them a nutritional drink rich in omega-3 fatty acids (a product called Racol) and tracked their skeletal muscle mass and blood markers before treatment, and again at 28 and 56 days later.

By day 56, patients showed an increase in skeletal muscle mass compared to their starting point (median rising from about 14.8 kg to 17.3 kg). The researchers also tracked how often chemotherapy sessions had to be skipped due to low white blood cell counts (neutropenia), comparing the two months before starting the omega-3 supplement to the two months after.

Pancreatic cancer patients in the study also received a digestive enzyme supplement starting on day 28, which may have influenced nutrient absorption and results for that subgroup.

What this means for you

This small, uncontrolled study suggests that adding an omega-3 rich nutritional drink during chemotherapy might help support muscle mass in people undergoing treatment for certain difficult cancers. However, this was not a randomized trial, so it can’t prove the omega-3 supplement caused the improvement — other factors like the digestive enzyme or general nutritional support may have played a role. Larger, controlled studies are needed before drawing firm conclusions. Always discuss any nutritional supplement with your oncology team before starting it during cancer treatment.
