Omega-3-Rich Diet Linked to Better Quality of Life in Lung Cancer Patients with Depression
This retrospective study looked at 103 patients with squamous cell lung cancer who also had depression. Researchers compared those on a routine hospital diet to those who added fish oil capsules (providing extra EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids) to their diet over six months.
The omega-3 group consumed noticeably more omega-3 fatty acids per day without any meaningful change in other nutrients or total calorie intake. When quality of life was measured using a standard cancer questionnaire, this group reported higher scores for physical and emotional functioning, along with lower scores for insomnia and constipation symptoms.
No significant differences were seen between the groups for lung function tests, role or social functioning, cognitive function, overall quality of life rating, or several other symptoms like fatigue, pain, or appetite loss.
What this means for you
For patients managing lung cancer alongside depression, these findings hint that a diet higher in omega-3 fatty acids might be associated with some improvements in day-to-day physical and emotional wellbeing, plus better sleep and digestion.
