Omega-3 Supplements May Ease Feelings of Social Isolation—Especially in Women
This study followed 68 healthy medical students who took either 2.5 grams per day of omega-3 fatty acids or a placebo for 12 weeks. Researchers measured feelings of loneliness and perceived social isolation, along with omega-3 levels in immune cell membranes and markers of inflammation in the blood.
Omega-3 supplementation raised omega-3 levels in immune cells for everyone, but females showed a bigger increase than males at certain points during the study. When looking at social measures, sex played a role: women who took omega-3 showed a modest reduction in perceived social isolation over time, while men showed no meaningful change. Neither group showed a significant change in overall loneliness scores, and inflammation markers didn’t differ by sex in response to supplementation.
The researchers suggest that differences in how omega-3s are absorbed or how sensitive the body is to their effects may explain why women responded differently than men, though they note more research is needed to confirm these findings.
