Omega-3 Supplements May Improve Liver Enzyme Levels in Fatty Liver Disease
This umbrella review combined results from eight prior meta-analyses (covering more than 6,500 participants) to look at whether omega-3 fatty acid supplements help people with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
The pooled data showed that omega-3 supplementation was linked to lower levels of liver enzymes commonly used to assess liver health, including ALT, AST, and GGT. Omega-3 intake was also associated with a reduction in measured liver fat.
Because this was an ‘umbrella’ analysis of existing meta-analyses rather than a single new trial, the findings reflect a synthesis of many prior studies with varying designs, doses, and durations of omega-3 use.
