Omega-3 vs Omega-6 Fats and Exercise: Effects on Breast Tumor Growth in Mice
This animal study looked at how diets high in omega-3 fats (from fish oil) versus omega-6 fats (from safflower oil) affected mammary tumor development in a mouse model genetically prone to breast cancer (Her-2 positive). Some mice also exercised on a treadmill before tumors formed, while others remained sedentary.
Mice fed the omega-3 rich diet developed tumors that were 55% smaller in volume and 42% lighter than those fed the omega-6 rich diet. Exercised mice on the omega-3 diet also stayed tumor-free about 24% longer than sedentary mice on the omega-6 diet.
Interestingly, exercise didn’t clearly help across the board—mice on the omega-6 diet who exercised actually developed tumors sooner and had the largest, most numerous tumors of any group. The researchers concluded that the type of dietary fat played a bigger and more consistent role in tumor outcomes than exercise alone.
