Omega-3s and Blood Markers in People with Diabetes or Heart Disease
Researchers pooled results from 16 clinical trials to see how omega-3 fatty acid supplements affected cholesterol, triglycerides, blood sugar, and inflammation markers in people with diabetes or cardiovascular disease.
Among people with diabetes, omega-3 supplementation was linked to a meaningful reduction in triglycerides and in a specific cholesterol-carrying protein called Apo AII, compared to control groups. Other markers examined—including LDL, HDL, total cholesterol, HbA1c, CRP, and TNF-α—showed mixed or less consistent results across the studies reviewed.
The authors noted that many of the included trials had methodological limitations, such as inconsistent blinding procedures and short follow-up periods, which affects how confidently these findings can be generalized.
