Omega-3s May Help Calm Nerve Pain Pathways in Animal Study

This laboratory study looked at whether omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil could influence the biological processes behind neuropathic pain — the kind of nerve pain that can follow injury or conditions like diabetes. Researchers fed female rats either a soy oil diet or a fish oil (omega-3-enriched) diet, then gave them a nerve injury known to cause chronic pain.

Rats on the omega-3 diet showed less sensitivity to heat and had better movement patterns after injury compared to those on the soy oil diet. When scientists examined gene activity in the nerve tissue, the omega-3 group showed changes suggesting improved antioxidant defenses, better handling of a mineral-dependent enzyme called GPX4, and reduced activity of several genes linked to pain signaling.

The researchers also compared these findings to previously collected data from spinal cord injury studies and human diabetic blood samples, and found similar patterns involving selenium-related metabolism and fat molecule remodeling, suggesting these pathways may be relevant across different types of nerve pain.

What this means for you

This early-stage animal research suggests omega-3 fatty acids may influence biological pathways related to oxidative stress and nerve cell protection that are involved in neuropathic pain. It does not show that omega-3 supplements treat or prevent pain in people, and human trials would be needed to know if these findings translate to humans.
