Omega-3s May Support Brain Function During Heat Stress by Boosting Cellular Cleanup
This study used mice exposed to heat stress to explore how high temperatures affect memory and learning, and whether omega-3 fatty acids could help. Heat stress damaged hippocampal neurons and their connections, harmed mitochondria, increased oxidative stress, and disrupted a cellular recycling process called autophagy.
Mice given omega-3 PUFAs showed better cognitive performance, along with protected neuron structure, fewer damaged mitochondria, and less oxidative damage in the hippocampus (a brain region key to memory).
At the molecular level, the researchers found that heat stress overactivated a signaling pathway called PI3K-Akt-mTOR, which blocks proper autophagy. Omega-3 supplementation reduced activity in this pathway, which appeared to restore normal autophagic flow and helped explain the improvements seen in brain cell health and cognition.
What this means for you
This is an early-stage animal study, not human research, so it can’t tell us whether omega-3 supplements would have the same effect on human cognition during heat exposure. However, it offers an interesting mechanistic clue: omega-3 fatty acids may support brain cell maintenance processes (autophagy) that get disrupted under stress conditions like extreme heat. More research, including human studies, would be needed before drawing conclusions about real-world benefits.
