Plant-Based Omega-3 Lipid Solution May Support Brain Metabolism Better Than Fish Oil in Newborn Piglets Fed Intravenously
This animal study compared two intravenous fat solutions used in parenteral (IV) nutrition for newborn piglets: one based on 18-carbon plant-derived omega-3 fatty acids (called Vegaven, containing alpha-linolenic acid and stearidonic acid) and one containing fish oil (SMOFlipid). Researchers fed young female piglets one of these solutions for 14 days and then examined brain tissue.
Piglets fed the plant-based omega-3 solution showed lower levels of inflammatory markers (including lipopolysaccharide and tumor necrosis factor-alpha) in the brain’s prefrontal cortex compared to those fed the fish oil solution. They also showed signs of more efficient brain energy use, including higher activity of an enzyme involved in energy production and higher levels of a ketone body used as brain fuel.
The fish oil group showed higher activation of a cellular ‘energy stress’ sensor (AMPK) without a matching increase in fat-burning capacity, suggesting less efficient energy handling. The plant-based omega-3 group also showed higher activity in signaling pathways linked to brain growth, connectivity, and memory-related processes.
What this means for you
This is early-stage research conducted in newborn piglets receiving IV nutrition, not humans taking oral supplements, so it does not tell us how omega-3 fatty acids affect people through diet or supplementation. It offers early scientific insight into how different sources of omega-3 fats might influence brain inflammation and energy metabolism in a clinical nutrition context, and highlights an area for future human research.
