UK Biobank Studies Link Higher Blood Omega-3 Levels to Better Heart and Metabolic Health

This review pulled together findings from 16 separate studies that all used data from the UK Biobank, a very large long-term health study in the UK. Each of these studies looked at people’s blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids (including DHA) and tracked their health over 11 to 14 years, with study groups ranging from about 20,000 to over 270,000 people.

Across these studies, people with higher plasma levels of total omega-3s and DHA tended to have a lower risk of coronary heart disease, heart failure, dying from cardiovascular disease, hemorrhagic stroke, and severe fatty liver disease. Higher total omega-3 levels were also linked to lower risk of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes, while higher DHA specifically was linked to lower risk of fatal coronary heart disease, ischemic stroke, and fatty liver disease.

The authors concluded that this body of UK Biobank research consistently shows an association between higher blood omega-3 levels and better cardiometabolic health outcomes, adding support to public health guidance around recommended omega-3 intake.

This large collection of population studies suggests that people who naturally have higher omega-3 levels in their blood tend to have better long-term heart, liver, and blood sugar outcomes — but because these are observational studies, they show associations rather than proof that omega-3 intake directly causes these benefits.
