Krill Oil May Help Protect the Liver from Toxin-Induced Damage in Mice

This laboratory study looked at whether krill oil could protect mice from acute liver injury caused by a bacterial toxin called lipopolysaccharide (LPS), which is often used in research to mimic severe inflammatory stress on the liver.

Mice were given krill oil or fish oil daily for four weeks before being exposed to the toxin. Compared to untreated animals, those pretreated with krill oil showed less liver enzyme elevation, less tissue damage under the microscope, and lower markers of oxidative stress, including reduced malondialdehyde and increased glutathione, catalase, and superoxide dismutase activity.

Krill oil pretreatment also lowered levels of inflammatory signaling molecules and reduced activity of a key inflammatory pathway (TLR4/NF-κB/NLRP3) in the liver. Notably, krill oil appeared to have a stronger protective effect than fish oil in this animal model.

What this means for you

This early-stage animal research suggests krill oil’s combination of omega-3 fatty acids and astaxanthin may support the body’s natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory defenses in the liver under toxic stress. These findings come from a mouse model, not humans, so they cannot confirm any effect on human liver health, and more research would be needed before drawing conclusions for people.
