Genes, Not Just Diet, Shape Fatty Acid Levels in Breast Cancer Survivors
This study looked at breast cancer survivors taking aromatase inhibitor therapy, a treatment that can disrupt fat metabolism and raise cardiovascular risk. Researchers examined three common variants in the FADS gene family, which controls enzymes that convert dietary fats into other fatty acids in the body.
People carrying certain FADS gene variants had lower blood levels of arachidonic acid (an omega-6 fat) and higher levels of its precursor, linoleic acid, suggesting their bodies converted one into the other less efficiently. One variant was also linked to lower levels of an omega-3 fat called docosapentaenoic acid (DPA).
Notably, when researchers compared actual dietary intake of omega-3 and omega-6 fats across the different genotype groups, intake was largely similar. This means the differences in blood fatty acid levels were driven mainly by genetics rather than what people ate.
