Chemotherapy May Disrupt the Body’s Natural ‘Stop Signal’ for Inflammation in Mesothelioma
This laboratory and patient-sample study looked at malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM), an aggressive cancer of the lining of the lung that is closely tied to chronic inflammation. Researchers examined fluid drawn from the chest cavity (pleural exudate) of patients and measured two types of fat-derived signaling molecules: pro-inflammatory mediators and “specialized pro-resolving mediators” (SPMs), a group that includes resolvins, protectins, and maresins made from omega-3 fats like EPA and DHA, plus arachidonic acid-derived compounds.
Patients who had received chemotherapy showed lower levels of these resolving mediators and higher levels of inflammation-promoting prostaglandins, suggesting that chemotherapy may interfere with the body’s natural process of shutting down inflammation once it’s no longer needed. Using single-cell gene sequencing, the researchers also found that mesothelioma tumor cells make less of the enzymes needed to produce SPMs compared to healthy mesothelial cells, hinting at a built-in imbalance in the tumor microenvironment.
Finally, the team built a five-gene score based on this lipid-mediator activity and found it could help predict patient survival independent of standard clinical factors.
What this means for you
