Can Omega-3 Help Kids with Fatty Liver Disease?

Cholesterol Fatty Liver Liver Health Prenatal Pediatric

This article answers a common clinical question: does omega-3 supplementation help children with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)? The authors reviewed existing research on the topic, noting that NAFLD is common among children in Canada and can potentially progress to more serious liver problems over time if unmanaged.

Currently, there is no approved drug treatment for pediatric NAFLD, so diet and physical activity remain the main recommended approaches. The review found that omega-3 fatty acids were linked to small improvements in liver fat (steatosis) and triglyceride levels in the studies examined. However, results on liver function tests and insulin resistance were mixed and inconsistent across studies.

While some biopsy-based studies showed improvements in liver tissue appearance, the review found little evidence that omega-3 supplementation improved liver fibrosis (scarring), which is the more serious aspect of disease progression. The authors concluded that omega-3 might have a supportive role for children who struggle with dietary changes, especially those with high triglycerides, but emphasized that diet and exercise should remain the primary focus, and more research is needed.

What this means for you

For children with fatty liver disease, this review suggests omega-3 supplements might modestly help with liver fat and triglyceride levels, but they are not a substitute for the foundational lifestyle changes of diet and physical activity, and shouldn’t be viewed as a proven treatment for liver scarring or more advanced disease.
