How Omega-3 DHA and Vitamin E Tocotrienol Affect Fat Droplets in Breast Cancer Cells
This laboratory study looked at triple-negative breast cancer cells and examined how they respond to docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid) and delta-tocotrienol (a form of vitamin E). Researchers were particularly interested in tiny fat storage structures inside cells called lipid droplets, which tend to be more abundant in more aggressive cancer cells.
When cells were treated with DHA alone, the number of lipid droplets actually increased. However, when DHA was combined with delta-tocotrienol, this increase was reduced. The researchers also found that cells with fewer lipid droplets tended to be less proliferative, and that removing a key structural protein involved in droplet formation slowed cell growth.
The combination treatment also boosted a process called lipophagy, where cells break down their own lipid droplets. Neither DHA nor delta-tocotrienol reduced overall cell survival on their own or in combination. The authors suggest that these nutrient combinations influence cellular pathways related to lipid handling in cancer cells and may be worth exploring further in cancer research.
