Large UK Biobank Study Looks at Blood Fatty Acid Levels and Atrial Fibrillation
This study used data from over 480,000 people in the UK Biobank to explore how naturally occurring polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in the blood relate to atrial fibrillation (AFib), a common heart rhythm irregularity, as well as related heart conditions like atrial cardiomyopathy and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction.
Researchers used blood metabolomics testing along with machine learning and statistical modeling to untangle how fatty acid levels connect to these heart conditions compared to other known risk factors like age, weight, and genetics.
The analysis found that traditional risk factors—things like body measurements, demographics, and genetic predisposition—were more strongly linked to AFib than blood fatty acid patterns were. People with AFib, atrial cardiomyopathy, or heart failure with preserved ejection fraction tended to have lower overall PUFA levels in their blood, and this pattern was especially notable among those taking cholesterol-lowering medications. Interestingly, higher blood levels of omega-6 fatty acids specifically were associated with lower rates of both existing and newly diagnosed AFib in this dataset.
