Omega-3 Fats May Help Protect Brain Cells in a Mouse Model of Parkinson’s Disease

This laboratory study used mice with a chemically induced form of Parkinson’s disease to see whether omega-3 fatty acids could help protect the brain. Researchers gave mice either saline, a neurotoxin (MPTP) that mimics Parkinson’s disease, or MPTP plus omega-3 fatty acids, then measured movement, anxiety-like behavior, and changes in brain and gut tissue.

Mice that received omega-3s alongside the neurotoxin showed better motor performance (such as improved balance and reduced stiffness), less anxiety-like behavior, and less damage to dopamine-producing nerve fibers and cells compared to mice that received the neurotoxin alone. Omega-3 treatment was also linked to lower levels of inflammation and cell-death signals in brain tissue.

A key finding was that omega-3s appeared to increase a type of immune cell called inducible regulatory T cells (iTreg) in the intestines, and this immune change was associated with the improved brain outcomes. This suggests a possible gut-immune-brain connection in this animal model.

What this means for you

This is early-stage animal research, not a human clinical trial, so it cannot show that omega-3 supplements treat or prevent Parkinson’s disease in people. However, it adds to a growing body of research exploring how omega-3 fatty acids may influence inflammation and immune activity in ways that could be relevant to brain health, and it may help guide future human studies.
