Plant-Based Omega-3 IV Nutrition May Support Neonatal Brain Metabolism Better Than Fish Oil Blend
This animal study compared two intravenous fat emulsions used in parenteral (IV) nutrition for newborn piglets: Vegaven, made from plant-based 18-carbon omega-3 fats (like stearidonic acid and alpha-linolenic acid), and SMOFlipid, which contains fish oil. Researchers fed female piglets one of these formulas for 14 days and then examined brain tissue for signs of inflammation, energy production, and growth-related signaling.
Piglets fed the plant-based Vegaven formula showed lower levels of inflammatory markers in the brain’s prefrontal cortex. Their brains also showed higher activity of enzymes involved in energy production and higher levels of ketone bodies, suggesting more efficient fuel use. In contrast, piglets fed the fish-oil-based SMOFlipid showed signs of cellular energy stress without a compensating increase in fat-burning.
The plant-based omega-3 group also showed higher activity of several signaling pathways linked to brain cell growth, connections between neurons, and gene activity important for brain development, compared to the fish oil group.
What this means for you
This is early-stage animal research on IV nutrition for critically ill newborns who cannot be fed by mouth, not a study on oral fish oil supplements for the general public. It suggests that the type of fat used in medical feeding formulas may influence brain inflammation and development signals in neonates, but these findings need confirmation in human studies before any practical conclusions can be drawn for infant or adult nutrition.
