Green-Lipped Mussel and Krill Oil Blend May Ease Muscle Soreness After Hard Exercise
This study looked at whether a supplement combining New Zealand green-lipped mussel oil with Antarctic krill oil could help reduce muscle soreness and stiffness after intense exercise. Fifty-one untrained men took either green-lipped mussel oil alone or a blend of mostly mussel oil with krill oil for 26 days before completing a downhill running session known to cause muscle damage.
Researchers tracked soreness, swelling, joint range of motion, strength, and blood markers of inflammation and muscle damage for three days after the run. Both supplements reduced the rise in muscle soreness compared to a placebo group, and both helped protect against loss of joint range of motion.
The blend containing krill oil performed at least as well as the mussel-oil-only version for most measures, and it appeared to better protect joint range of motion at the 24 and 48 hour marks. No other meaningful differences were found between the two supplement groups.
What this means for you
For people who do intense or unfamiliar exercise, this research suggests that green-lipped mussel oil, especially when combined with krill oil, may be associated with less soreness and better joint mobility during recovery—though this was a small study in untrained men and more research is needed before drawing firm conclusions.
